Secular elements in the republic of Bosnia
are voicing their fears that the Bosnian government is shifting towards Islam. This comes after the authorities of the Sarajevo Canton in December
announced that there would be no alcohol served in open-air during the 2017 New
Year parties. Other factors that are being seen as signs by the secularists
include: Arabs buying large parcels of land in the country, advert placements
being written in Arabic and a national consensus in 2013 declaring Bosnia a
predominantly Muslim country at over 50%. December last year saw the University
of Sarajevo announcing that it will stop classes from holding during Jum’at
prayers. Bosnian Muslims became more conscious of their Islamic faith after the
massacre of around 8,000 Muslim men and boys by Serbian soldiers in the Bosnian
war that lasted from 6th April 1992 to 14th December 1995
leading to the death of over 100,000 people mostly Bosniaks (Muslims). The 2013 census shows Bosnia to have a total
population of 3,531,159 with a density of 68.97/sqkm. On the October 7 2012, the country saw the election of Europe's first Hijab-wearing mayor; Amra Babic. According to a WHO report, Bosnian and Herzegovina has Europe's hardest drinkers which makes it difficult to understand why the secularists are outraged.
