Coffee: A Great Muslim Contribution

Cup of coffee
After crude oil, coffee is the most sort after commodity in the world. Coffee is a beverage gotten from refining coffee beans; a type of seed from coffee plant. The two main species commercially cultivated are Coffea canephora (C. robusta) and Arabian coffee (C. arabica).

Coffee today is consumed by people in all corners of the globe with millions of liters being drunk every day. It is believed that 500 billion cups of coffee is drunk every year.

People have often asked the questions:
What is the origin of coffee?
Did Muslims introduce coffee to the world?

Even though no Muslim nation is a leading producer of coffee, the historical roots of coffee-drinking must not be erased.

Common tales have it that coffee-drinking originated from Ethiopia on the horn of Africa but, historians (including non-Muslims) totally disagree with this assertion.

Historians have noted that the first instance of coffee brewing and drinking was recorded in 15th century Yemen where the Muslims in sanctuaries savored its taste and effects.

The visits to Yemen by merchants from other regions brought about the proliferation of the art of coffee brewing and drinking. By the 16th century, the drink had reached Persia, Turkey, and North Africa. From there, it spread to Europe and the rest of the world.

It should however be noted that the plant itself, Coffea arabica (C. arabica), originated from Ethiopia.

According to the Business Insider, coffee exporting alone is a $20 billion dollar industry and dominated by non-Muslim nations and companies. The Grand View Research says the global ready to drink tea and coffee market size is expected to reach USD 116.13 billion by 2024.

The world’s largest producer of coffee is Brazil; producing 3,019,051 tonnes of the item annually. The country with the highest coffee consumption is Finland where 12 kilograms (26 lb) is drunk per person every year.

Coffee is known to be a stimulant, enabling the consumer stay awake and alert for longer thereby increasing productivity and also providing a splendid aroma and taste.

Coffee can be grown on lots of soils but the ideal types are fertile volcanic red earth or deep sandy loam. For coffee trees to grow it is important that the soil is well draining which makes heavy clay or heavy sandy soils inadequate.
