Boko Haram members with leader Shekau |
In an audio that went viral yesterday, a voice
which is supposedly that of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, praised the
bombing, declared that Boko Haram was responsible for it and promised more of
such attacks. In the speech which was in Hausa language, the speaker called the
victims of the attacks ‘infidels in mosques’ because they supported the political
participation of Muslims in the democratic system. The speaker said with no
remorse, “The act of participating in politics is worse than homosexualism”. The
speaker in the audio once again said that he was Shekau and that he has not
been killed contrary to what the government has said in the past. The voice
also said the audio was recorded on the evening of the day of the attack. The
speaker called on Muslim scholars who criticize the activities of Boko Haram to
bring their proofs that the group is a deviant one. He also lashed out at
President Muhammadu Buhari calling him the leader of an infidel land. It would
be re-called that prior to the Presidency of Buhari, Boko Haram once called on
him to mediate between them and the government of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan;
Buhari declined. On Monday (16th January 2017), a suicide bomber detonated his explosives in the Central Mosque of the University of Maiduguri Borno state killing five and injuring fifteen others. Among the martyrs were a Professor of veterinary medicine and four students. Boko Haram pledged allegiance to the ISIS terrorist group in 2015.
