Sunni Body: Shi’ites Must Be Part of IMA

The Chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Hamid Raza, lashed out at the 39 member Islamic Military Alliance referring to it as being sectarian and lacking the support of the worlds Muslims. This came as retired Pakistani General Raheel Sharif was declared the commander of the IMA without the consent of the Pakistani parliament. Hamid Raza has been critical of the exclusion of Iran, Iraq and Syria from the alliance. Most of the 39 members of the IMA are Sunni dominated countries however, Gen Raheel Sharif who is a close ally of the SIC chair gave the Saudi government three conditions to which the Saudis agreed to.  The conditions are:
– Raheel Sharif would be the commander or in-charge of such a force and there would be no command above him.
– Iran must be invited and added into the coalition.
– Raheel Sharif will have the authority to mediate between any two member countries in case of some disagreement or confusion.

Raheel Sharif accepted the position only after the Saudis agreed to his terms and a formal proposal from the Saudis will be submitted to Pakistan in March. The Islamic Military Alliance which is led by Saudi Arabia and is head quartered in Riyadh Saudi Arabia, was formed on 15th December 2015 with the main aim of combating the ISIS threat and other terrorism related issues in the Muslim world. It draws its membership from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) even though not all OIC member states are active in the alliance. The alliance has a 620,000 strong army but has met criticism from people who believe it might just turn out to be a military tool for the Saudis just as NATO is in the hands of America.
