A girl who left her parents to marry a Muslim
man after reverting herself has written a letter to the judge presiding over the
case stating that she was 18 years old when she took the decision and not 14 as
her Christian father says. The father of Habiba Ishaqu, Mr Ishaqu Tanko backed
by Trustees of Stefanos Foundation, Evangelical Church Winning All and ECWA has
challenged Habiba’s decision to leave Christianity saying she was underage.
Habiba’s lawyer Mr Abu Umar argues, “Even if she is a minor as argued by the
defense, there is no law that prevents a minor from expressing his or her views
according to the Nigerian Constitution.” The presiding judge, Justice Ilyasu
Wali has however ruled that there would be need for Habiba who has since
married Jamilu Lawal to deny or confirm authorship of the letter. The case has
been adjourned to January 25th.
